About Whitefish

The charming town of Whitefish, Montana is comprised of approximately 7,000 people. It is nestled at the base of Big Mountain and on the shore of Whitefish Lake in the breathtaking Northern Rocky Mountains. The City is situated only 24 miles west of magnificent Glacier National Park, known as the "Crown of North America" for its soaring mountain peaks, lush green valleys, and cool running streams. Whitefish is truly a magical place where the highest structures are still trees and wildlife still outnumbers residents.

Whitefish is renowned for the vast array of opportunities it offers to outdoor recreationalists. It's location on the west side of the divide protects it from the extreme weather changes encountered in other portions of Montana, making it ideal for year-round outdoor fun. The summer average temperature is close to 80 degrees and the winter month’s average is in the low 20’s. Snowfall provides ample winter entertainment opportunities including skiing, snow-mobiling, snowboarding and ice fishing. Summers provide fishing, boating, horse back riding, hiking and camping fun.

Arguably the biggest draw of the Whitefish area is Big Mountain. Offering more than 3,000 acres of slopes, valleys and flatland, there are opportunities for every level of skiing experience. Besides the 86 marked runs, there are trails for snowshoeing and snow cycling and a vast array of Nordic trails are mapped out in the general Whitefish area. A free shuttle (snow bus) service runs from virtually every form of lodging up to the mountain on an hourly schedule. This makes it possible to eat breakfast at a local café, catch a shuttle and get in a day’s skiing, catch another shuttle back down the mountain and be out quaffing a cold microbrew back in town that same evening.

The people of Whitefish are genuinely friendly and down to earth. The town's low-key atmosphere tends to make life in their tight-knit community a happy and warm place to live and visit.
